In addition to harvesting CO2 (Howard Robinson’s answer), tree also brake air, and allow dust and other floating debris to slow down long enough to fall out of the air.
Finally, they tend to cool and humidify air, which allow further agglomeration, and “fallout” nearby.
So loss of trees, reverses all these gains.
