Cyclonic rainfall: This type of rainfall occurs when
warm air is forced to rise by a body of cold air. It
occurs in both tropical areas and in temperate areas.
In the tropical areas, cyclonic rainfall is associated
with intense tropical storms called cyclones.
Cyclones are formed when the air over the sea heats
up and rises, leading to the formation of an area of
low pressure on the surface. Colder and heavier air
from the surrounding areas rushes in to the area of
low pressure, forcing the warmer, lighter air to rise
and condense. Cyclones are characterised by heavy
rainfall accompanied with strong, spiralling winds.
In temperate regions, cyclonic rainfall occurs when a
mass of cold air meets a mass of warm air. The warm
air is forced to rise above the cold air, leading to the
formation of rain.
