1. Digestion is how your body turns food you eat into nutrients it uses for energy, growth, and cell repair. The digestive tract (or gastrointestinal tract) is a long twisting tube that starts at your mouth and ends at your anus.

2. Food enters the digestive system through the mouth. Food is broken down into smaller pieces by chewing. The teeth cut and crush the food, while it's mixed with saliva. This process helps to make it soft and easier to swallow.

3. The small intestine is the "work horse"' of digestion -- while food is there, nutrients are absorbed through the walls and into your bloodstream. What's left over (the waste) moves into your large intestine (large bowel or colon).

4. The walls of the small intestine absorb water and the digested nutrients into your bloodstream.
