Other than sheep, wool can be obtained from the animals like camels, goats and rabbits. The Alpaca, a camel breed, gives fibres which are light weight, soft and shiny in nature. The Cashmere goat gives soft and warm fibre which is called Cashmere fibre.

The quality of wool is determined by its fiber diameter, crimp, yield, color, and staple strength. Fiber diameter is the single most important wool characteristic determining quality and price.

The animal fibers used most commonly both in the manufacturing world as well as by the hand spinners are wool from domestic sheep and silk. Also very popular are alpaca fiber and mohair from Angora goats.
