1. Solids have a fixed shape because the particles or molecules of solids are tightly packed. The intermolecular force of attraction is very high therefore decreasing the intermolecular spaces between the particles of matter.

2. The particles of liquids do not have a definite shape but have a definite volume and can be compressed. The intermolecular force of attraction is not as strong as solids and the intermolecular spaces are big. Therefore, this properties enables liquids to flow from higher to lower level and are hence called fluids.
