COD or Chemical Oxygen Demand is the total measurement of all chemicals (organics & in-organics) in the water / waste water;

BOD is a measure of, the amount of oxygen that require for the bacteria to degrade the organic components present in water / waste water.

The ratio of BOD/COD is about; COD is higher than that of BOD; maximum of up to 4 times in medium scale industries; but it varies based on the industrial process and nature of the raw materials used;

In simple concept, COD means the need of oxygen to oxydize or decompose the organic or chemical substance. To decompose or to be rotten any organic substance, there must need of oxygen for the reaction. On the other hand, BOD means, evry aquatic species need the least minimal oxygen to respiration to live on. It is related the stocking density of species along with the avlability of oxygen in the water. In general, COD is greater than BOD in water. Thank you!
