Tributaries:

A tributary is a small stream that joins the main river mostly in its upper course.

They increase the volume of water of the main river.

For example, river Alaknanda and Bhagirathi meet at Devprayag to form river Ganga.

Distributaries:

Distributaries are small river or streams which get separated from the main river before it meets the sea.

The distributaries decreases the volume of water when they split off from the main river.

For example, river Ganga splits into Bhagirathi, Hooghly at Farakka in West Bengal.
