The total potential difference across R is 8 Volts.

Explanation:

  • When tow circuits are connected in parallel then their resistance can be calculated as
  • 1 / R' = 1/3 + 1/6
  • 1/R' = 3 / 6
  • After calculating we get
  • R'= 2 ohm
  • Now total resistance of the circuit = 2 ohm + 4 ohm = 6 ohm
  • Now to calculate the total current flowing through the circuit =  Voltage / Total resistance
  • Total current (I) = 12 / 6 = 2 A
  • Now the potential difference
  • V = R1 x I = 4 x 2 =  8 volts
