"MOSCOW appears much less clean than the other European capitals. None of those hurrying
along the street look smart. The whole place belongs to the workers. Here the masses have

background for ages have come forward in the open today...... I thought of the peasants and
workers in my own country. It all seemed like the work of the Genii in the Arabian Nights.
Only a decade ago they were as illiterate, helpless and hungry as our own masses .......... Who
could be more astonished than an unfortunate Indian like myself to see how they had removed
the mountain of ignorance and helplessness in these few years'.

1. The author portrays Moscow as a place that is not as clean as 'the other European capitals',

mainly because the place 'belongs to the workers'. Everyone looked the same, and no one looked 'smart'.

2. The masses there seemed to have been liberated. They were not marginalised anymore and had 'come forward in the open'. They were not repressed, but we're leading normal lives like everyone else. They had fought and been able to get rid of ' the mountain of ignorance and helplessness' in their lives.

3. The author Rabindranath Tagore calls himself unfortunate because he belongs to a nation where the masses (the peasants and workers) were yet to be liberated. The masses in India were ignorant, which rendered them helpless and made them suffer because of it. Another unfortunate thing is that while the Russians were able to get back on the path to progress within a few years, the Indians continued to suffer under British rule for a long time. ( You can get this understanding by looking at the year mentioned in the text- 1930, when the British were still in India.)
