Respect is a strong emotional and intellectual connection to another person, or persons, based on their ability to communicate, by words and actions, their consistent adherence to a set of shared values.
It's important to teach children that respect is something every person deserves, as a human being they deserve to be treated with respect. However, children should be taught that having respect for someone does not mean always agreeing with them, accepting any and all of their behaviour as right or even liking them.We have come to think of respecting someone means respecting all they do and say or being obedient without question to those in authority. It doesn't. It means respecting a persons RIGHT to choose, in turn they respect our RIGHT to disagree or have a different opinion. This engenders respect for others but also empowers children make choices for themselves.
