Answer:
carbohydrates are polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or large polyhydric molecules that can be broken down to polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones on acidic hydrolysis.
They mainly classified into i) Monosaccharides. eg: glucose, Ribose etc
ii) Oligosaccharides. eg: Lactose, Maltose
iii) Polysaccharides. eg: Cellulose and starch
Explanation:
i) Monosaccharides:- They donot break down into more simple form on hydrolysis. If contains and aldehyde group called aldose and if keto group is present called ketose.
ii) Oligosaccharides:- They give two to nine monosaccharides upon acidic hydrolysis.
iii) Polysaccharides:- They give large number of monosaccharides on acidic hydrolysis.
