Study using data for 14 sectors finds limited overall employment impact of information and communication technologies
The study assessed the impact of information and communication technologies (ICT) on productivity at sectoral level. On that basis, it assessed the employment effects on 14 industries, in nine EU countries, the US, China and Japan between 2000 and 2021. The study concludes that negative effects on employment due to substitution are comparable to the positive effects due to changes in prices and income in most sectors. Additionally, productivity increases in ICT production itself contribute positively to employment.
In conclusion, the study finds that, overall, digitisation has had virtually no effect on employment. The study also underlines that a reallocation of jobs across sectors in the process of digitisation is more likely than a net job loss of a significant magnitude.
