Dabki lived with her family in a small village in Jharkhand. Her father was a worker in a
cloth-making factory and her mother was a homemaker. Dabki and her brother went to a nearby
school. Dabki loved going to school. She was a bright student and excelled in all the subjects.
She always dreamt of becoming an engineer,
When Dabki was 15 years old, the textile factory closed down and her father lost his job. To
feed the family, her parents started working as labourers at a construction site. However the
income was not sufficient to run the house. As a result, Dabki was forced to leave the school
and work as a domestic help. Her brother continued to go to school. "A boy who is educated will
earn money. A daughter will get married and take care of the household. Why should we spend
money on her education?" thought Dabki's father. Dabki was disheartened to learn that she will
not be able to go to school now.
Dabki started working as a domestic help at Mr Mehta's house. He was a rich businessman
and had a daughter named Riya who was the same age as Dabki. Riya would go to school in
the morning and take private tuitions at home in the afternoon. On one afternoon, Dabki finished
her work early and was sitting outside Riya's room. She noticed Riya's teacher's voice who was
explaining to her how to solve a Math question.
