Doctrine of lapse

Doctrine of lapse was the policy imposed by Dalhousie.
According to the policy if a dependent state had a ruler who died childless then the power will be transferred to the sovereign automatically.
Although adopted sons could perform the religious duties of the person but they had nothing to do in the political matters.
This issue was important because the fate of people in that state was highly dependent on the decision.
