dams are usually thicker at the bottom.Why?

Yes it is. Because pressure of the water is much greater deeper down.

The dams needs to be thick at the bottom so that it's strong enough to withstand with this kind of larger pressure.

This is because the pressure of water in higher at the bottom than at the top. Therefore the dam needs to be thicker and stronger at he bottom to withstand this pressure.
