Dams over rivers made broader at the bottom than the top. Give reason. ​

The reason is that the pressure increases as we go deeper and deeper into the water. So, the pressure is greatest at the bottom of the water. So, to withstand the pressure, dams are made broader at the bottom.

Liquid pressure at a point increases with increase in level of the liquid above that point.

Therefore, the lower we go, the higher is the liquid pressure ( in any liquid ).


In rivers, the lower part exerts more pressure on the dam than the higher portion does.

Thus, to withstand this high pressure, the dams are made broad at the bottom and slim at the top ( since liquid pressure isn’t that hight at the top ).
