What is the length of the pole that Daniel needs to support the middle of the tent?

length of base = 80 inches

length of half base = 40 inches

now in the figure ,the required pole is perpendicular to the base so applying Pythagoras theorem in either small triangles,.

${40}^{2} + {x}^{2} = {85}^{2} \\ {x}^{2} + 1600 = 7225 \\ {x}^{2} = 5625 \\ x = 75$

the length of the required pole is 75 inches.
