Hotter objects emit more heat energy than cooler ones. Dark, rough surfaces are not only good absorbers of infrared red radiation, but are also good at emitting (losing) it. On the other hand, light, shiny/reflective surfaces are poor absorbers and emitters of infrared radiation.
