Data in a database at a particular point in time is called "Extension".

  • For a given relation, extension is the number of tuples present at any moment in that relation. These tuples are not fixed. As time goes on, these tuples get 'created', 'destroyed', and 'updated'. This is why the frequency of the change in the data may be high.
  • The permanent part of the database is called Intension. This is not dependent on time and does not change. A 'structure' and a 'set of integrity constraints are the two parts of an "intension".
