Answer:

Compressive strain in an elastic material is defined as the deformation in a solid due to the application of compressive stress. In other words, compressive strain is produced when a body decreases in length when equal and opposite forces try to compress (or squeeze) it.

Analysis of load stress for pavement structure

Lijun Sun, in Structural Behavior of Asphalt Pavements, 2016

Maximum compressive strain at top of subgrade

The maximum compressive strain on the top of subgrade exhibited a gradually decreasing trend as the base modulus increased. Under the loading cases of 600/2500 and 1050 kPa/6250 kg, when the base modulus of the cement treated subbase course changes from 500 to 7000 MPa, the maximum compressive strain decreases by almost 30%. However, when the base modulus of the flexible subbase course is changed from 300 to 1400 MPa, the maximum compressive strain, on average, decreases by almost 40%. Overall, these results show that the maximum compressive strain on top of the subgrade changes along with changes in the base modulus, and that the degree of variation or change is also a function of the component of the pavement structure.
