The concept of social change is a very broad one. It consists of a constellation of processes of change in human society in terms of place, time and context. Since it is so broad, it is bound to be somewhat imprecise, tentative and value-neutral.
We will analyse the processes and patterns of social change and mobility in Indian society. Special attention will be paid to the views of Mahatma Gandhi and to his efforts to bring about a non-violent social revolution in Indian society. Gunnar Myrdal’s rationalist approach to the understanding of socio-economic development will also be discussed.
