Rice and natural dyes used to make Kolam patterns are meant to feed the birds and insects. It is believed that Kolam designs in front of the house are meant to welcome Goddess Lakshmi into the house. In villages, the ground on which Kolam art is made is first prepared by sprinkling water mixed with cow dung.
