Plastics
To make your own plastic.
Things needed: 500 mL (2 cups) of milk, 150 mL (2/3 cup) of vinegar, food colouring, a strainer
with fairly small openings, a small saucepan, a stirrer, and a stove
Procedure:
1. Pour milk in the saucepan.
2. Slowly warm the milk, but do not heat it even close to the boiling point.
3. Add some food colouring to the milk to form coloured plastic.
4. Remove the pan from the stove and add vinegar to the milk.
5. Stir the mixture until tiny lumps form in it.
6. Use the strainer to separate the lumps from the liquid in the pan.
7. Pour a little water through the strainer to rinse the plastic.
8. Form the plastic into a ball and set it on a paper napkin for a few minutes to remove some of
the excess moisture.
9. Mould the plastic to form objects of different shapes.
10. Set the objects aside for a week to dry. The objects may shrink a little as they dry out.
11. Show the objects you made to your classmates and the teacher.
