In the poem Daughter of the Century, Kamala Das expresses her fervent and yet very simple desire. All that she longs for is a sunny porch in her house and her husband always by her side. She says that if she has these two desires of hers fulfilled, she will have nothing more to ask for. The poet says that she will then retire from her youth and step into old age without any complaint. She also makes a promise to have a control over her lust.

Answer:The very beginning of the poem tells us that we,humanbeings are no better than animals because we learn things just the same way as they do.The speaker says that we imitate others. Then the speaker speaks about the cruelty of the city life that eats us.Then the speaker criticizes the contemporary society that doesn't value even blood-relations .The speaker says that we should have the strength to protect ourselves from our grandchildren who may even try to kill us.Such is the condition of the society. The speaker says that each mother suckles her own enemy .The child will grow up and kill her one day.The killer of a man is with in him.The seed that is capable of impregnating a woman i. e semen itself carries the killer of a man.Humans mate like Gods with a great freedom but the child born to them will be the one who takes away their life. The speaker says that we,humans are devalued like currency .The intense relationship between humanbeings and nature is expressed when the speaker says that the saltiness of our tears comes from the sea.

Then the speaker says that we are pickled just like the mangoes in salt water.Something is taken away from us for future use.We have no present. We wait for our future forgetting to enjoy our present moments. Then the speaker says that though there is no wall between the earth and the sea ,it doesnot spill over. The sea knows its boundaries. Nature knows its limits but we humans try to build walls around us and also between our relationships..........

This is the summary of first few lines of the poem "Daughter of the century ".Please forgive me if any mistakes.....
