Let David , Joseph and Mathew have d, j and m marbles respectively.
  d + j = 328 --------------(1)
d + m = 176 --------------(2)

Subtracting (2) from (1):
j - m = 328 - 176 = 152 ---(3)
As j = 5m (given),
therefore equation becomes<
5m - m = 152 or 4m = 152 or m = 38 ----------(4)

From (2) and (4), d + m = d + 38 = 176 ==> d = 176 - 38 = 138

 David , Joseph and Mathew have x, y and z marbles
 x + y = 328
x + z = 176
y=5z

by comparing the above three
5z+x=328
z+x=176
subtracting the two equations
we can get
david has 138 marbles
