David had received Rs.9409 from his friends for a picnic he was organizing. The amount of money he received from each friend is equal to the number of friend that paid him money. How many friends paid for the picnic​

Since average increase by Rs 4, it suggests the number of friends attending must be a multiple of 4. Also, since 4 friends are not attending, it suggests the original number of picnickers should also be a multiple of 4.

Hence, both numbers should be factors of 96 with difference of 4.

Factors of 96 ( greater than 4 ) are 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48.

Since 4 friends are absent, only combinations possible is (12,8) & (16,12)

Evaluating individually, we have :

96/12 = 8 & 96/8 = 12

12 - 8 = 4

And, bingo, we have the answer as 8 !!!!

The second pair doesn't satisfy given conditions.

96/16 = 6 &. 96/12 = 8

8 - 6 = 2
