Answer:

A number of friends decided to go on a picnic and planned to spend Rs. 96 on eatables. Four of them, however, did not turn up. As a consequence, the remaining ones had to contribute Rs. 4 each extra. The number of those who attended the picnic was?

Intuitive method

Since average increase by Rs 4, it suggests the number of friends attending must be a multiple of 4. Also, since 4 friends are not attending, it suggests the original number of picnickers should also be a multiple of 4.

Hence, both numbers should be factors of 96 with difference of 4.

Factors of 96 ( greater than 4 ) are 6, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48.

Since 4 friends are absent, only combinations possible is (12,8) & (16,12)

Evaluating individually, we have :

96/12 = 8 & 96/8 = 12

12 - 8 = 4

And, bingo, we have the answer as 8 !!!!

The second pair doesn't satisfy given conditions.

96/16 = 6 &. 96/12 = 8

8 - 6 = 2
