Calorific value refers to the energy obtained by the fuels which is determined by the heat released busy it during it's combustion

Higher calorific value refers to the heat produced by combustion of unit quantity of a solid or liquid fuel when burned at constant volume in an oxygen bomb calorimeter under specified conditions, with the resulting water condensed to a liquid.

Lower/net calorific valurof a fuel portion is defined as the amount of heat evolved when a unit weight (or volume in the case of gaseous fuels) of the fuel is completely burnt and water vapor leaves with the combustion products without being condensed.
