preparation of benzanilide from benzoyl chloride + aniline + sodium hydroxide . what is role of sodium hydroxide ?

hey mate here is the role of sodium hydroxide in benzoylation which include formation of HCl

The aqueous NaOH acts as a scavenger of HCl produced during the reaction which can promote side reaction.
