: The federal government on July 29 announced the New Education Policy to promote education among people of India. The policy covers elementary education to colleges in both rural and urban India.

This is the third national policy on education. The first was promulgated in 1968 by the government of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the second by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986, which was later modified by the P.V. Narshima Rao government in 1992.
