Good morning everyone
present here. Distinguished guests, learned jury, and my dear fellow students,
I stand here to express my views on 'Man is a slave of circumstances.' And I am going to speak against the motion. If circumstances held any sway over our destinies, then all of us would have the same wins, and successes; for circumstances are the same for all of us! There are as many theories and philosophies on uncountable phenomena as are stars in the sky. These theories and philosophies have so many varied schools of thought that one gets so perplexed listening to them their different views on the one same phenomenon. Similarly, different people may have different views regarding circumstances' relationship with destiny. I strongly adhere to the belief, man himself is the maker or waster of his destiny; circumstances just are the ground on which we play the inning of our life! Circumstances are there to inspire and motivate us to chisel our destiny into whatever shape and form we desire through industry and diligence. Tryon Edwards has aptly said these words on the subject:- 'Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; actions from habits; habits decides character; and character fixes our destiny. So if man really wants to be the master of circumstances, he must develop a flawless character. Lincoln, Helen Keller, Einstein, Yoganada, Vivekananda, are some of the perfect role-models in front of us who through developing their character, became the masters of their destiny. So if you ever wish to be master of circumstances, master your character first.
