Dams are important because they help people have water to drink and provide water for industry, water for irrigation, water for fishing and recreation, water for hydroelectric power production, water for navigation in rivers, and other needs. Dams also serve people by reducing or preventing floods.

but why have dams failed in India ?

This is because many of the dams that are built only cater to the people living in the surrounding areas. The water fails to reach to the poor farmers and those who are on the lower level pushing them into poorer conditions.

The people who are displaced for building dams are never given proper places to live, their business affects badly and they are left in poverty. The poor farmers cannot even bathe and feed their cattle. Even if they are given new places to live, the places have poor infrastructure and no proper facilities. The Displaced are not only affected economically but also psychologically as they are unable to adjust in new environments and get stress because of their financial problems. They may even face hostilities from the pre-existing communities that live there. Many tribal communities lose their rights on water bodies and a sense of customs & traditions is lost.

The government does not pay heed to the pleas of the people and no strict laws have been passed for the people. The promises that are made to people being displaced are never fulfilled.
