S. Kavyashree, who is visually-challenged, secured a Ph.D. degree from the University of Mysore recently.

S. Kavyashree of Mysuru has proved that disability is not an obstacle to achieve something in life.

The visually-challenged girl made the city proud when she secured a Ph.D. degree from the University of Mysore for her research ‘Dynamics of administration in Karnataka with special reference to Kengal Hanumanthaiah’s regime’.

Kengal Hanumanthaiah was the second Chief Minister of Karnataka, best remembered for his contribution to the construction of the Vidhana Soudha.

The Rotary Mysuru Midtown recently felicitated Dr. Kavyashree.

According to the Rotary Mysuru Midtown, Dr. Kavyashree was born visually-impaired. Her parents, B. Siddaramu, a retired commercial tax inspector, and mother, Meenakshi, a housewife, were proud of her achievements.

Dr. Kavyashree did her initial schooling at Ranga Rao Memorial School for the Blind, pursued PU at the Sri Vivekananda Composite Junior College in Jayalakshmipuram, and BA at the Vishwakavi Kuvempu First Grade College. She did her MA from the University of Mysore.

For the Ph.D., Dr. Kavyashree mastered English to write her thesis. She realised she would need to learn the language in order to use the software for the visually-challenged.

She took up a six-month computer course at the JSS Polytechnic.

The software helped her scan books, read and work on computers. “Society has been kind to me. There are problems in everyone’s life and we need to go ahead. There is nothing special about me. I had to strive a little harder,” she said.
