It acts a motivational factor for students to get a better grade. In turn, these grades promote competition between students, as far as grade points averages are concerned.
Many public or private schools are transitioning to standard-based grading system which rates a student's proficiency in individual standard-based skills. It has largely eliminated the marks system drawbacks and by its reaping benefits.
