• The cover can reveal important information about the book, like if it has been written with little effort or even what genre it is: if you buy ‘Einstein: The Complete Story’ on Amazon you probably wouldn’t be happy with a tale about Dotty the Dinosaur and Jim exploring the Prehistoric world, all in font size 72.
• The author of the book is trying to sell it, and that is exactly what the cover is there to do. A small advertisement simply to sell the book. This comes across to the idiom, but if you apply the same principle then if someone does present themselves well on the outset, then they, in your eyes, do not seek to impress you, this should reflect badly on their character: they are not advertising themselves.
• A bad cover could show that the author is cutting corners, not something you want.
• The whole point of the cover is to sell the book, if you don’t get that right, how would you get the rest right.
