INTEGRITY A WAY OF LIFE IN MANIPURI

  • In maipuri there are two types of tribals one is Meiteis and other one is manipuri tribals. Meiteis has converted into Hinduism about 300 years back.
  • The Meiteis has become orthodox Vaisnavs and started treating the Manipuri tribals as untouchable. About 50 years back Manipuri tribals were not allowed to enter inside the house of the Meiteis and the meals were served separately in different utensils.
  • Later on Meiteis have reconverted back to “Sanamahi” and the remaining Meiteis have also come out of the narrow orthodox mindset. However, the shameful behaviour of treating the Manipuri tribals as untouchable by the Meiteis in the aftermath of converting to Hinduism lasted about 250 years.
  • This resulted in tremendous damage to the harmonious relation between the Meiteis and the Manipuri tribals.
  • After many years untouchability has become offense in India and slowly this system went away.

Integrity a way of life in manipuri:

  • The Manipuri tribal and Meitesis live for hundreds of years.
  • Meiteis converted themselves to Hinduism before 300 years. They call themselves Vaishnavs but, they are orthodox.
  • They treat Manipuri tribal as untouchable. Before 50 years they were not allowed to enter Meiteis house.
  • The meals were served separately in different utensils. Now huge sections of Meitesis have again converted to “Sanmahi” and the remaining Meiteis have changed their orthodox mindset.
  • The Meitei was blinded by religious belief.
