Debate point on teachers are more important than doctors
Answers
Now, I might be a little biased, being the son of an elementary school teacher.
Okay, maybe a lot biased.
And if you are a doctor, are married to a doctor, are really happy with your doctor, or disagree with me, I’m willing to listen to you in the comments below.
You are more important than my opinions, and I’d be interested to hear another side of the story here. Just please don’t bring your pitchforks.
Why do I feel like I already have to apologize for this?!
The Simple Truth of It
Teachers affect their students minds and lives forever.
Doctors just prolong the inevitable.
Now, this doesn’t apply in a lot of cases, and I get that. For people with cancer, babies and children, and many others for whom life is cut far too short, doctors are very important.
But for me, if I absolutely had to choose between having lifelong access to doctors and lifelong access to teachers, I’d choose teachers.
Not the kind that just stands and lectures, no. I’m talking about teachers in all their forms:
Mentors
Coaches
Influencers
Writers, speakers, good bosses, and so many others are great teachers. All are included here.
What I’ve learned in the classroom and from books and mentors far outweighs any physical health I’ve enjoyed. But I’m probably biased about that too because I’m a pretty healthy guy.
Why I’m Wrong About This Whole Thing
Now, you could definitely argue that a teacher doesn’t do any good if you don’t have a doctor to keep you alive so you can learn.
But it’s also true that there would be no doctors if there were no teachers.
Okay so we’re coming to a stopping point here. It’s not so much about which profession is more noble. Although I do believe that teachers get far less than they deserve in compensation and status.
The solution is that we should all become lifelong learners.
A character trait which, unfortunately, is scarcely found in today’s schools.
We can all think of those classes that we got through with and hated the whole time. We wondered if it would ever be useful to know how to do long division or know the capitol of Turkmenistan.
While at the same time gladly remembering those with the amazing teachers that brought their certain subject to life in a way that made us want to be just like them if we ever grew up.
If We All Became Lifelong Learners
The hard pill to swallow here is that YOU and only you are responsible for your learning. Not just grades, or diploma, or degree.
Your learning.
If you become your own teacher by treating everybody you meet as a teacher and mentor, then the teachers vs doctors debate is completely useless.
And, speaking of treating everyone as teachers and mentors, even the people making bad decisions can mentor you by teaching you how not to live your life.
Success is all based around your attitude.
You have to choose to be proactive about your learning. Seek learning and mentoring every moment of every day of your life.
It’s not your fault if you haven’t figured this out yet. Our current school systems suffocate a learning attitude in most cases, and there’s not a lot you can do to change that.
But you can change yourself.
And that might just be the only thing that you need to learn to become successful and live a long life.
