Growing mall culture is the sign of modernity

Good morning everyone present here. I am going to express my views against the motion ‘Growing mall culture is the sign of modernity.’ I would like begin with the definition of modernity. According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary modernity is anything that is new and different from traditional style. We are today debating on whether growing mall culture is the sign of modernity. Well, I would say no.  Growing mall culture can not be termed as modern.

Modern means more convenient, sophisticated, securer, causing less environmental pollution. Modern means better than before. Malls are nothing but more organized markets where the same old types of transactions of selling and buying are carried out. If we call shifting a market into an air-conditioned building with escalators, we are mistaken then.

The changes we see in this system is the general change of life from one level to another. This change is omnipresent. In schools, banks, travelling, transportation, computers, hospitals, etc. All other institutions have equally changed! Will we call our going to hospital a sign of modernity as well as we go to more organized and better equipped hospitals?

True modernity is a never ending process; it will keep on happening. Mere going to malls and hanging around with friends, family members can’t be termed as modernity. We will become truly modern when we will live life without harming the environment and one another in any manner.

I conclude by reasserting that growing mall culture is not sign of modernity.

Answer:

India’s retail sector has grown enormously from ‘Haat’, ‘Weekly Bazaars’ to posh, sophisticated and swanky shopping malls. A few years back our mothers used to go to ‘kirana ki dukan’ to buy grocery which now is available in grocery stores. In small towns, cities and even in metros and big cities ‘kirana shops’ still dominate and fulfil the daily needs of a family. Though the dynamic transformation is going on but definitely retail stores and malls have been transforming the retail industry from unorganized to organized. Still a way to go as organized retail sector is just 5% of the total retail sector in India.
