There were a number of reasons for the decline of Buddhism in India. Among these reasons, one important reason for the decline was rise of Bhakti Movement.

The Bhakti Movement opposed caste system and believed in equality and brotherhood. It believed in monotheism and complete devotion to God. It challenged the unnecessary rituals and customs. Its teachings were simple and the preachers used to preach in vernacular languages. So the people were much impressed by the teachings of Bhakti Movement and began to follow the same. The Bhakti saints visited every nook and corner of the country to spread the teachings of Bhakti Movement.

As the teachings of Bhakti Movement reached to all the people, they were much impressed and began to adopt the same. As the Bhakti Movement became very popular, the Buddhism began to decline. The emotional Bhakti Movement became dominant and was a blow to the rational and philosophically religion of Buddhism.
