Sodium Cyanide is a hazardous chemical and is basically used in the extraction of Gold and Silver in industries. Being very much toxic in nature, it is also hazardous when exposed or in contact with eyes or skin. The fumes should not be inhaled or swallowed.
In case inhaled or swallowed then it is important to seek immediate medical attention. In general, reusing the drums that are used for storing NaCn is never advisable.
One of the most effective ways to reuse the drums is to try and clean it up with Ferrous Sulfate. This will simply neutralize the sodium cyanide but it is important that the solution should be allowed to rest for about 30 minutes before cleaning.
In the final stage you can also clean the drum using the Calcium or Sodium Hypochlorite solution. Before you reuse the drum it is also advisable to test it for presence of cyanide.
