actually green colour is patina.the cu of brass is oxidized by oxygen of air and forms cu2o which is raddish and it is further oxidized by excess o2 and produces cuo it reacts with sulfate and co2 of the air and forms patina which is mixture of malachite, broncholate, green colour is because of malachite

Brass and bronze too, are alloys of copper. Brass is the alloy of zinc and copper whereas bronze is the alloy of tin and copper. The atmospheric gases react with the copper present in brass and turn it green. This green film is mostly copper carbonate.
