Answer:

There are three(3) bond pairs and two(2) lone pairs. The two lone pairs will occupy the position at equatorial which are cause for the distraction of molecule hence it has a distorted ‘T’ shape structure.

The molecular shape of  BrF_3 on the basis of vsepr theory is T-shaped.

Explanation:

Formula used to know the molecular shape:  {\text{Number of electrons}} =\frac{1}{2}[V+N-C+A]

For

where, V = number of valence electrons present in central atom

= 7

N = number of monovalent atoms bonded to central atom  = 3

C = charge of cation  = 0

A = charge of anion = 0

{\text{Number of electrons}} =\frac{1}{2}[7+3-0+0]=5

The number of electrons is 5 that means the hybridization will be sp^3d and geometry of the molecule will be trigonal pyramidal.

But as there are three atoms around the central oxygen atom, the fourth and fifth position will be occupied by lone pair of electrons. The repulsion between lone and bond pair of electrons is more and hence the molecular geometry will be T-shaped.
