Subhash Chandra Bose was a nationalist who loved his motherland more than his ideologies. Sadly, this is the reason why the great hero of India has received only fragmentary treatment while the pictures of the pantheon of Independence, in Gandhi ji and Nehru, are hung in every government institution in the country.
Great Deed : In the early years, he went to England to appear in the ICS examination to fulfill the promise he had made to his father. He stood fourth in the coveted ICS examination but did not pursue the service and outrightly rejected it. He didn’t want to work for the government he hated growing up. The fierce patriot chose to devote himself to the freedom of India from British rule.
Wait, why did I used the term "fierce patriot" to address him?
He was expelled from Presidency College (Kolkata) just because he couldn't tolerate anti- India comments from a British professor and assaulted him. Fast Forward to 2010, a bust of the 'arrogant' student, who later went on to become a national hero, was installed in the same college that he was expelled from.
(Badass much? )
Great Deed : Bose stood for Swaraj (Self Governance) even if it meant using the force to achieve it. He grew frustrated with the working of INC and Gandhiji’s dominance within it. But, he respected Gandhiji. He had become more popular among the Indian youth after the death Bhagat Singh and Jatin Das. Sympathy waves were strongly in his favour. People saw in him their Bhagat and Jatin as he pronounced ‘Swaraj’ by any means. It was then, Gandhiji tried to outmaneuver him by offering him the presidency of INC.
Reason: Bose’s appointment would have appeased the large faction of people who grew frustrated after the futile Irwin-Gandhi Pact. Gandhiji wanted to win people back. He also thought that the glamour of Presidency would distract Bose from his actual demand of Swaraj. But, he was no Nehru. He was Bose. He had left ICS to serve his motherland. Glamour of Presidency didn’t stop him.
In the Haripura Session of INC (1938), Bose called upon the members to fight for Swaraj. Moderates were frustrated over this approach. In the following year, Gandhiji fielded Pattabhi Sitaramayya against Bose for Presidency of INC. Bose defeated him (shows how popular he was) and Gandhiji declared that Sitaramayya’s defeat was his defeat! Bose wanted to take advantage of the second world war to hit the British government. Gandhiji wanted to wait till the war was over.
Sensing rift in the INC, Bose resigned. He formed ‘Forward Bloc’, to consolidate the political left with a faction within INC who supported him. He didn’t want to go against Bapu.
Great Deed : Gandhiji blessed his ‘rebellious son’ who was adamant to pursue his vision and who proposed taking help of ‘enemy’s enemy’ in the WWII. But, he made clear that the INC would never support him. Later, he would escape from house-arrest to envisage what he dreamt.
What followed next is the journey from-
Calcutta—Peshawar—Kabul—Moscow—Rome—Berlin
Berlin Scenes: An Indian in a foreign soil, all by himself, trying to convince someone who was no less than a monster (Hitler). Bose was there because throughout his life, he didn't think of anything but the concept of free India.
He was able to convince Hitler and thus, the 'freedom army' (Mukti Sena) came into being.
And Netaji gave the famous- : ‘Jai Hind’ from the Free India centre, Germany. But, this was just the beginning.
Great Deed : Germany was preoccupied in its own affairs. Bose realised that he wouldn't get much help from them. He left for Japan. An Indian expatriate leader, Rashbehari Bose had a group of people from ‘prisoners of war’ camp who were the INA(Indian National Army) but lacked leadership and were a mere pawn of Japanese High Command.
Bose revived the Indian National Army. He knew the art to tap into their hearts. He organised massive support among the Indian population in South-East Asia. He was one hell of a motivator and crowd puller. When INA was being organised into different units, a large number of women urged to be a part of it. The fact that the women mobilisation was achieved in Asia back then, speaks volumes about Netaji’s personality.
It was then he gave the infamous-
“ Give me blood, I'll give you freedom"
( Tum mujhe khoon do, mai tumhe azaadi dunga )
____________
I hope it helps.
