The inner membrane of mitochondrion which is also called Cristae is folded. The cristae is the oxidative organ or part of mitochondrion. Now as the enfolded membrane have larger surface area so it provide large surface area for the redox reaction in the mitochondria which results in ATP generation.
Therefore, for generation of more ATP the membrane is folded..
