Word default tab stops are set at half inch intervals (but that don't need to be the most efficient one in most cases.)

The default tab stop position is 0.5".
In Microsoft Word or word processing, a tab stop is the horizontal position stop point in the active document, set manually for aligning and placing text at a particular position.
By pressing the Tab key insertion point in the current paragraph will be moved to the next tab stop.
