When the lattice parameters are different in the epitaxial layer of a crystal and the substrate layer, then a mismatch in lattice happens. Due to this, the LED layer experiences a lattice strain.

The defects in crystals occur due to this. Radiationless EHP recombinations are is activated by crystal defects, and hence the defects can create recombination centers.
