In case the substrate crystals and the epitaxial layer have different crystal lattice parameters there is a lattice mismatch between the two crystal structures. This leads to lattice strain in the LED layer. As a result crystal defects occur.

Crystal defects encourage radiationless EHP recombinations. Therefore a defect acts like a recombination center.
