Deference between primary and secondary production
Answers
The rate of generation of biomass in an ecosystem is termed as productivity in ecology. Productivity of autotrophs such as plants are referred as Primary productivity, while that of heterotrophs such as animals is called Secondary productivity.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PRODUCTIVITY IN ECOSYSTEM
1. Primary productivity is the rate at which radiant energy is captured by the producers for the synthesis of energy rich organic compounds through photosynthesis whereas Secondary productivity is the rate of energy storage at the consumer level. The consumers directly or indirectly use the food material from the producers and simply convert it into various forms.
2. Primary productivity is the result of synthesis of fresh organic matter from inorganic materials whereas Secondary productivity is the result of synthesis of organic matter from organic matter.
