In plant morphology, thorns, spines and prickles are all similar type of structures identified by their sharp and stiff ends. Thorns are obtained from shoots. Spines are obtained from leaves and prickles are derived from the epidermis. They all are related to anti-herbivore defense mechanisms of plants.

Prickle – A sharp outgrowth from the epidermis or bark. A thorn is a modified stem and can be recognized because it is subtended by a leaf. In Alluaudia, each pair of leaves subtends a thorn. A spine is a sharp pointed structure that is a modified leaf or stipule.
