The word couple in used in general to mean ‘two of something’. In Physics (more accurately, Mechanics), the term is used to denote a pair of forces. By that however, I don’t mean any pair of forces.
The forces must be equal in magnitude and oppositely directed to each other.
Their lines of action must never coincide.
They must be parallel to each other.
They are displaced by a perpendicular distance.
The net force must be zero. However, the net resultant of the couple is always a pure moment i.e. a turning effect.
As you can see in this diagram here, two forces, each of magnitude FFseparated
by a perpendicular distance SSact in opposite directions, thereby producing an effect that turns the circle in the clockwise direction. The turning effect or the moment of the couple is known as the torque. It equals the product of one of the forces and the perpendicular distance between them i.e:
τ=FS
Examples:
Opening of a tap
Turning of a screwdriver
Forces on a electric dipole in a uniform electric field
I hope this will help you
